Keepers of the Light centres on findings and observations around the iconic lighthouse at Portland Bill in Dorset, Southern England, and the location of its original production – Chance Glassworks in Smethwick in the West Midlands.
Using text, audio recordings, oral histories, archive materials and photographic and film fragments, Brendan Jackson and Geoff Broadway made a book and a short film between 2018 and 2019. The work explores, celebrates and shares the connective history and significance of these places, engaging with narratives and themes of place and identity. Both the book and film were launched in October 2019.
The project was supported by Arts Council England, Sandwell M.B.C Local Area Budget, and in cooperation with Sandwell Community History and Archives Service and Chances Glass Works Heritage Trust. Thanks also to b-side on Portland, and Smethwick Heritage Centre.
